HISTORY DOESN’T REPEAT ITSELF, BUT IT RHYMES.” (ATTRIBUTED TO MARK TWAIN, REPEATED AD NAUSEUM BY MR. U)
You are to demonstrate the relevance of that quotation for the period of American History covered in this course (basically through 1877). You should be prepared to choose at least four pairs of events, concepts, ideas (that means at total of eight events…) and for each pair, be able to:
a)Describe briefly the event, concept, idea;
b)Show how they are similar enough to “rhyme;” and
c)Show how they are different enough that they do not “repeat themselves.”
In other words, describe, compare and contrast.
I would encourage you to use as many examples as you can from the period before 1850 (basically the material not on the “hourly” portion of he final). You may use whatever resources you can access (including Wikipedia, despite its occasional mistakes), but do not come to me and say, “I can’t think of anything. What should I do?” Reflecting on the material we have covered and finding the “rhymes” is a significant part of the assignment, and the reason you have ample time to prepare.
